Looking at Self Ligating Braces

Crooked teeth can look unattractive, and even lead to much more serious problems down the line not only with dental health but even your overall health and well being. There are many types of braces used to help correct errant teeth, but one type that many people might not be aware of is the self ligating braces design. What are self ligating braces? This is the description given to any type of dental braces which do not require ligatures (the small metal bands which hold the wires of braces in place) and instead that the bracket can more or less be tied directly to the arch wire of the braces without the additional help. While they won’t be right for everyone, self ligating braces can be a viable or even preferred option for many individuals.

These are not the same as more conventional designs used for braces, but depending on the situation they can be a viable option. Generally speaking these braces will be smaller than conventional models and many people find them more aesthetically pleasing. For teenagers during their awkward stage of development this increased appearance benefit is no small thing: it can be a very big deal socially. Approximately a half dozen companies specialize in self ligating braces including:

• Damon Braces by Ormco Corp
• In-Ovation Braces by GAC International LLC
• SmartClips by 3M
• Carriere LX by Ortho Organizers
• Clarity SL

These aren’t the only self ligating brace designs available, but they do make up a considerable percentage of the current dental market for these specialty braces. Many orthodontists are turning to this particular style more and more often because of the time savings that result from not having to tie in wires every appointment.

Self ligating braces come in a variety of designs and surprisingly to many people they also come in a wide variety of materials, as well. While stainless steel might still be the majority norm you also have some of these braces made from clear plastics or even ceramic material. Some companies produce styles of self ligating braces which actually use a combination of all these materials.

There are other benefits touted about by fans of these relatively new braces. Many claim they are more comfortable than the more conventional design, and may even require less frequent office visits for maintenance or correction. Less resistance between the brackets and the arch wire can be more comfortable and make the correction process for your teeth more comfortable as well.

Dental patients need to understand that these braces are not temporary. They are permanent braces which cannot be removed until the treatment is fully completed. This makes it extremely important to consult with a dental professional and to heed any advice given before making a decision. Only a professional dentist is going to have the training and knowledge to determine whether or not you are an ideal candidate for the self ligating style of braces. Ask specific questions, heed the dentist’s answers, and go from there.
